Birds of Paradise by Priscilla Roehm

I designed, pieced, and quilted this spiral mandala quilt in an online group that helped RaNae Merrill as she wrote her now published book Magnificent Spiral Mandala Quilts. You can see it in the book on p. 33. Making the quilt was quite a journey! As I designed it, I saw Birds of Paradise and fish emerging that reminded me of my years living in Florida.  If you like to paper piece, you might be interested in looking at this book.

Quilts of Valor

A thank you to the members of the Champlain Valley Quilters Guild, the Franklin County Guild and others who worked on the beautiful Quilts of Valor.
Five Quilts of Valor were delivered in May to soldiers serving with the 86th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (MTN)...[IBCT (MTN)] who are getting services at Walter Reed Medical Center.
SGM Toby Quick, VTARNG offered the following quote:
The Soldiers loved them and it will be with them for a long time and hopefully be able to be handed down to their grandchildren.
Your generosity was well received, Tammie Schmitt and Roseanne Terrill

Amber Waves by Alexandra Nickerson

I was invited to participate in this Smith-Kramer exhibit being curated by Judith Trager: America Celebrates! Quilts of Joy and Remembrance Curated by Judith Trager "America Celebrates!" an exhibition of fifty-four art quilts from American fiber artists, is a joyful, diverse, and sometimes touching look at how we see ourselves as a nation. The exhibition seeks to find how we as ordinary people share the threads and traditions that tie Americans together. Touching on holidays, cultural, and personal celebrations, the exhibition is a bright and colorful look at our cultural mores and how we see ourselves through our traditions. The exhibition will also feature those traditions that Americans brought with them as immigrants-Diwali from India, the Winter Solstice from Northern Europe, and Cinco de Mayo from Mexico. The artists in this exhibition are as diverse as the quilts themselves. They come from every geographical region of the United States and represent many ethnic and cultural groups. Judith has let me know that my quilt "Amberwaves" was one of three quilts chosen for its article announcing the exhibit by the Longmont Museum and Cultural Center Colorado), where the exhibit will open on January 14, 2011. Also, the November issue of Machine Quilting Unlimited will have an article about the exhibit, with pictures of 14 of the quilts, one of which is mine. I feel very honored, especially since some of the other artists have international recognition; among them are Judy Dales and Laura Wasilowski! Here's the description of my quilt: Amberwaves celebrates the song “America the Beautiful,” the lyrics of which were written by Katharine Lee Bates, my great-aunt by marriage, when she climbed Pikes Peak in 1893 and said of the view that “all the wonder of America seemed displayed there.” The foundation-pieced background is constructed of commercial cotton fabrics, silk dupioni, rayon and silk velvet, and home decorator fabrics with thread-painted wheat and grasses and gold ink enhancement.
