What is Community Quilts?
“Community Quilts” is not only the name of the branch of the Champlain Valley Quilt Guild (CVQG) that directs and organizes the charitable donations of quilts made by the Guild, it also refers to the actual quilts made by many different members of our guild community working together to support our larger, surrounding community.
All guild members are welcome to participate regardless of skill level or experience. Although many of us do find this work rewarding, participation in any and all CQ activities is strictly voluntary and there are no guild requirements or expectations that members participate in these efforts.
Community Quilts are often made by a single member or may be a joint effort the members of a quilting group. Other completed quilts are the result of the combined efforts of many individual Guild members, almost in round-robin style. One member might adapt a specific pattern for our use. A second might cut the fabric pieces needed for the quilt while a third person might piece together the top. A fourth member might assemble and sandwich the quilt top, batting and backing in order for a fifth to quilt them together.
There may be a sixth person to stitch on the binding and, possibly even, a seventh to attach the Guild label to the completed quilt.
Description: Community Quilts come in all sizes and run the gamut from approximately 18” square to bed size. While we do tend to focus on “throw size” and smaller quilts in order to be most efficient, we do try to meet specific requests for larger sizes as we are able. We try to have a variety of quilts appropriate for juveniles and adults; male, female and gender-neutral.
Funding: Community Quilts activities and materials are funded by the Guild. While we cannot pay for materials purchased independently by individual members for community quilts, we do have fabric and batting available for any Guild member who wishes to make community quilts. We also have quilt kits that contain instructions and fabric.
